Summary

This position is located in the Midshipmen Repair Tailor Shop, part of the US Naval Academy's Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentality (NAFI), Naval Academy Business Services Division (NABSD), Annapolis, MD. The Fabric Worker is occasionally required to work in alternative work spaces. Incumbent alters garments, and replaces parts that are damaged. Incumbent lets out or takes in side seams, hems pants and skirts, attaches insignia, takes part in manufacturing brigade flags, and removes sleeve lace.

Duties

Help

  • Lets-out or takes-in garments., and replaces parts that are damaged. Tapers skirts, trousers and shirts. Replaces zippers in pants and skirts; hems jacket and coat sleeves, opens and prepares sleeves for striping lace application, then closes and re-sets sleeve length. Sews Velcro on uniforms as needed, and on various patches for customers.
  • Sews final seams on prepared Brigade Flags; sews insignias on clothing; receives garments during Plebe issues and during Summer striping collection.
  • Uses various electrical machines to include industrial straight stich, blind stitch, and pinking machines to achieve desired results.
  • Keeps work area clean and obeys all safety regulations.
  • Physical effort includes standing, sitting for long periods of time; stooping, bending, kneeling; lifting up to 10 pounds.

Qualifications

In order to meet the basic requirement of the Fabric Worker position, NA-3105-07, you must meet the following requirements:
(a) Experience performing Fabric Working duties, which may include, but are not limited to, sewing by hand and by machine, working with various materials (polyester, cotton, leather, etc.), pressing garments, repairing defects, etc.
(b) Ability to lift items up to 10 pounds, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, and continually use arms, hands, and fingers in pulling and positioning materials while sewing and using tools.

YOU WILL BE RATED ON THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs) FOR THIS POSITION:

  1. Experience performing alteration on garments by reading chalk marks and pins used to fit customer (taper, lengthen or shorten pants and skirts, attach insignia, etc).
  2. Experience sewing by hand.
  3. Experience using various tailoring machines (industrial straight stitch, blind stitch, serger and merrow, electric irons and commercial steam presses.
  4. Experience maintaining a satisfactory production level with established deadlines.
  5. Experience in customer service with strong communication skills.
