Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the coordination of Advanced MSA assignments and workflow found in an interdisciplinary unit.
  • Responsible for daily workload assessments, assigning work, and assuring proper staffing coverage; evaluating training records; and determining training needs of MSAs to provide support across interdisciplinary settings.
  • Assists the unit with complex and non-standard procedures, including clinical flow processes related to access to care
    across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources.
  • Plans and organizes work with general assistance from the supervisor as to meet local and VA-wide time frames to complete analysis requirements, reports and special assignments and only refers to the non-routine and high technical problems to his/her supervisor.
  • Responsible for reporting backlogs, difficulties in meeting deadlines, uncooperative physicians, or difficulty in securing information from clinicians or the record.
  • Routinely communicates with physicians, case managers, and other allied health professional staff using sound interpersonal skills and is constantly aware of the sensitive information.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Experience. No experience required.
  • Education. High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial- level Board or Department of Education.

Grade Determinations:

GS-0679-07 Lead Medical Support Assistant:

Experience.
One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to meeting the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • (a) Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community.
  • (b) Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff.
  • (c) Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • (d) Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
  • (e) Ability to provide staff development and training.
  • (f) Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics.

Preferred Experience:
  • 6 months of Training experience.
  • 6 months of EMR use.
  • 6 months of a Leadership role.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is for GS-07.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is an ambulatory health care system with services in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. We operate a 100-patient Home Based Primary Care program and a 200-patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program, which include the Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic, Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic, Harlingen Outpatient Clinic, Health Care Center at Harlingen, Laredo Outpatient Clinic, and McAllen Outpatient Clinic.

Through utilization of inpatient/emergency department contracts, we manage approximately 2600 inpatient admission and 5800 ER visits annually. Affiliated with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School, we have an ambulatory care program serving as a teaching/training site for medical residents.
