Summary

This position is located within the N92 division of Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, NS Mayport, Florida. The incumbent is directly responsible for all team and individual adult sports at the installation. The purpose of this position is to supervise the assigned athletic facility/facilities and direct facility sports and fitness events, including sports officials, and conducting sports clinics during hours assigned.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Assists and furnishes athletic equipment for routine and special activities.

  • Ensures athletic fields and equipment are in accordance with approved schedules and operation plans.

  • Inspects buildings, facilities, and equipment within assigned areas of responsibility to determine maintenance, repair, and condition of sanitation.

  • Monitors outdoors athletic areas to ensure that scheduled events take place at the time and date scheduled.

  • Prepares work assignments as necessary to maintain athletic areas and ensures follow-up work to be performed by activities as necessary.

  • Develops input to annual budget and executes preplanned budget spending.

  • Initiates purchasing, surveying, issuing, and upkeep of recreational and athletic equipment.

  • Provides input into determining the usage of budget resources for equipment upkeep and replacement, program support needs, and staffing.

  • Reviews new and replacement equipment, researches prices, and recommends quality and quantity to be purchased.

  • Coordinates the operation and administration of the intramural sports programs including program development, organization of leagues, development of rules and regulations, and scheduling events.

  • Oversees the organization of leagues and tournaments in flag football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, tennis, golf, softball (slow pitch), racquetball, swimming, etc.

  • Develops team rosters into leagues or brackets and prepares a schedule showing time, date, location of play, and opponents.

  • Explains schedules, playing areas, rules, regulations, use and care of equipment, and maintains official records to establish team standings.

  • Administers the local Captain's Cup program based on demands and needs of the local installation command structure.

  • Provides a marketing program on a continuous basis for the intramural sports program. Arranges new releases, flyers, and posters to maximize patron's participation. Coordinates with program managers and key staff personnel to gather information pertinent to the facilities, programs, services, and special events for publication in the MWR Monthly supplement in the base newspaper.

  • Develops and conducts sports orientations for new military personnel and their families.

  • Coordinates special events and joint community programs to ensure effective use of all MWR facilities and resources.

  • Responsible for the operation, upkeep of all outdoor athletic facilities.

  • Plans, organizes, and conducts tournaments and special events.

  • Acts as the MWR volunteer coordinator.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

A qualified candidate must possess the following:

  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years documented experience in sports and fitness.

  • Must have a working knowledge of league and tournament organization and operation as well as knowledge of basic rules of play of major team and individual sports.

  • Knowledge of the range of activities and services and of participant interests and needs typical of a program which enables the employee to develop and conduct a large and exceptionally diversified program in this specialty area.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and the ability to speak effectively, make presentations and conduct training.

  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of patrons to include military officer and enlisted, foreign military, retired and reserve personnel, military family members and authorized civilians.

  • Must be a mature individual with an adequate level of physical fitness, with sound leadership, and both written and verbal communication and interview skills.

Education

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in related field leading to a bachelor's degree, in an accredited college or university.
