Help

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • This position supports and facilitates interpretive operations for the park's north district.
  • Based at the Hiouchi Visitor Center, this position will develop and lead a full range of formal interpretive programs including talks, hikes, evening programs, and other special programs; coordinate day-to-day operations of a visitor center including schedule development, and; assist with coordination of special events for the district.
  • At the full performance level this position serves as a frontline leader, recruiting and mentoring personnel and coaching interpretive programs.
  • Additional duties may include leading or supporting half-day guided kayak trips in summer.
  • Redwood National and State Parks is co-managed with CA Department of Parks & Recreation (CDPR), and these positions work closely with partner staff.
  • Duties are sometimes performed in CDPR visitor centers, parks, and campgrounds, and occasionally under direction of CDPR staff at special events.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

This is a Career-Seasonal position and is subject to release and recall procedures. Permanent career-seasonal positions include all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year round basis. As such, selectees may be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks up to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. This position is expected to work approximately 11 and half months per year. It is expected that the positions will be in a non-pay status for up to 2 weeks at the end of January to mid-February. The first year will be guaranteed which will be outlined in the career seasonal agreement you must sign during onboarding. Upon return of the first non-pay status the career seasonal is subject to change per management's decision, however, the incumbent will be notified if the career seasonal agreement is updated.

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: To qualify for this position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level:
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Developing and presenting a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducting walks, and giving demonstrations to a variety of audiences; Developing interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, exhibits; Operating a variety of audiovisual and other media used in connection with interpretive programs; and Performing day to day operations of a visitor center, information center, or similar facility. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
  • Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. (One year of graduate education is 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses with credit hours and grades listed if you are using education to qualify. Official transcripts will be required upon selection. -OR-
  • Combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, first take the percentage of experience held by dividing the number of months of qualifying full-time experience possessed by 12 and then multiplying by 100. Then determine the percentage of qualifying graduate level education completed by dividing the number of credits completed by 18, then multiply by 100. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses with credit hours and grades listed if you are using education to qualify. Official transcripts will be required upon selection.
  • Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): Successfully completed a bachelor's degree in a directly related field AND meet one of the following: (1) Class Standing: rank in the upper 3rd of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, based on the completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (GPA): earn a GPA of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on 4 years of education, or based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum -or- (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field, or the required courses completed during the final two years. Note: GPA will be rounded to one decimal place, for example, 2.95 = 3.0, 2.94 = 2.9; OR (3) Membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level:
  • Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: Developing and presenting a variety of interpretive programs including orientation talks, conducting walks, and giving demonstrations to a variety of audiences; Developing interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, exhibits; Operating a variety of audiovisual and other media used in connection with interpretive programs; Performing day to day operations of a visitor center, information center, or similar facility; and Leading and/or training an aspect or function of an interpretive or visitor services operation, directing/delegating tasks, offering guidance and feedback to team members, and troubleshooting discrepancies. -OR-
  • Education: Successful completion at least two full academic years of graduate education related to the occupation, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, ecology, biology, geology, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, geography, English or other languages, behavioral sciences, sociology, education, or communication (two years of graduate education is defined as 36 semester hours).   • Combination of education and experience. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
