Duties

Help

As a FIRE CHIEF (GS-0081-12), you will serve as the Fire Chief responsible for the overall management and supervision of the fire protection/crash rescue and fire prevention program for the base.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Incumbent may work a minimum 56 or 60-hour week with supervisor’s approval.
  • Required to participate in a physical fitness program and pass an annual physical.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week unless TDY or on leave.
  • This position meets criteria for secondary/administrative coverage under special retirement coverage provisions in that it requires prior experience in a primary or equivalent outside experience as a prerequisite.
  • Applicants must possess or be able to obtain the appropriate clearance within one year of appointment.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 36 months experience, education, or training in one or more of the following areas: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. (2) Rescue operations. (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services. Experience in managing the function of the work to be performed. Experience which includes leading, directing and assigning work of personnel.

Education

Must be certified by the DOD Fire Fighter Certification system as Fire Officer IV (includes Fire Officer I, II, III), Fire Instructor II (includes Fire Instructor I), Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I), HAZMAT Incident Commander (includes Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations), and Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II).

You must provide Official Transcripts as documentation to support your educational claims. To receive credit for Education, you must provide documentation of proof that you meet the Education requirements for this position.

Additional information

Relocation Incentive: May be authorized for highly qualified candidates or hard to fill positions. TAG is final approval authority for any incentive requests.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The maximum entry age for DoD firefighters is 37. An individual not appointed by the last day of the month in which the individual becomes age 37 will not be originally appointed or assigned to these positions.

Employees in positions, involving firefighting duties or other duties involving arduous physical exertion, may be subject to periodic (e.g., annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.

The employee is subject to random drug testing. Pre-employment drug testing and participation in random drug testing may be a condition of employment when on the job announcement. Drug testing will only occur once a drug free workplace policy has been established and approved by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Applicants may be required to pass a drug test prior to appointment.

Special Retirement Provisions Authority:

  • FERS - Position covered as secondary under the FERS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 USC 8401(14), 5 USC 8412 (d), and 5 CFR 842.802]. Authority: Authority: Secretary of Defense Memorandum, dated 31 Aug 89.
Note: Special Retirement Coverage is effective retroactive to the date of the personnel action of this SCPD.

This position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration. This designation will not exceed 14 calendar days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by the TAG.
