Duties

Help
  • Conducts epidemiological investigations, on-site water quality analysis, air and soil sampling for environmental and occupational concerns.
  • Provides technical leadership for studies and assessments, assigns work to supporting professional and technician personnel, and directs field activities.
  • Conducts Technical Assistance Visits (TAVs) and training for a variety of Department of Defense (DoD) activities, and Army Preventive Medicine, Medical Detachments (MED DET - PM).
  • Develops and delivers specialized technical training in the areas of biology, chemistry, environmental science/health, sustainability, and environmental management for DoD personnel.
  • Participates in briefings, technical committees, and workshops and is relied upon as a technical authority.

  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) of at least 30%.
  • Incumbent may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing such as respirators, safety glasses, shoes, hats, and harnesses.
  • A pre-employment physical is required, and periodic physicals may be required. Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet the physical efforts requirement.
  • Incumbent is required to carry equipment weighing as much as 50 pounds.
  • Incumbent must be able to possess or obtain and maintain Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Reporting System (DOEHRS) access and training within six months of hire date.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential." In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • A 1-year probationary period will be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Physical Scientist (Environmental):

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

To qualify for the GS-13:
One year of experience which includes planning studies or assessments to resolve environmental and occupational health problems; conducting epidemiological investigations; leading field activities in conducting multi-media environmental sampling and analysis; proposing improvements to environmental surveillance practices; and providing technical recommendations on environmental health concerns. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

To qualify for the GS-12:
One year of experience which includes planning studies on environmental or occupational health problems; evaluating data from epidemiological investigations; conducting multi-media sampling and analysis; and providing technical guidance to lower-level personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

To qualify for the GS-11:
One year of experience which includes performing tests and analyses on environmental samples; operating standard instruments to collect field data; documenting observations and compiling results from routine sampling; and applying established scientific practices and regulatory procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).






Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
