This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Fort Hood rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Duties

Help
  • Performs driver maintenance and must have knowledge of driving rules and procedures.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains a variety of small and domestic heating units and systems.
  • Installs and repairs heating systems and equipment, that have components, controls, and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Repairs large and expensive valves used in large systems; tightens loose connections and glands; repacks or replaces gaskets.
  • Assists on extensive repairs to complex components such as feed water regulators; dismantles and cleans valves and checks the internal linkage.
  • Repairs and replaces water regulators, boosters generators, gas and air supplies and controls, alarms, safety devices, blower and draft motors and bearings.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DoD license required for the type of vehicle being driven.
  • Position may require overtime and irregular work hours to include weekends, holidays, and evenings in support of mission related requirements.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heating Equipment Repairer ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Heating Equipment Repairer duties. I can install, troubleshoot, and/or repair a variety of small and/or domestic heating units and systems such as oil and gas fired hot air furnaces, low pressure hot water and steam boilers, and other equipment with comparable arrangements of heat sources, controls, and circulating methods. I can replace items such as safety devices, thermostats, heating element switches, magnetic coils, bearings and brushes, or frayed wires. I can make repairs to gas lines including installation of new piping. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

  • Physical Effort: The equipment in these systems are large and difficult to put in and take out of specific locations. The mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing and replacing large units. The mechanic frequently makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently for longer periods of time.
  • Working Conditions: Works in rooms on concrete floors subject to relatively high temperature and is exposed to gas, smoke, ash and burns from scalding water and contact with heated parts of the system. Subject to injuries from falls, dropping moderately heavy items, and use of hand tools. Frequently must wear protective clothing and devices such as goggles, respirators, heavy aprons, hard hats, and gloves and occasionally works outside or in cramped quarters.
