Dentist are licensed independent practitioners that practice based on their specific approved privileges and guidance derived from VHA, Medical Center, and Service Directives/Memorandums. All Dentists will provide direct patient care in an outpatient setting to an adult patient population with a high percentage of acute and chronic medical conditions. Dentists report directly to the Lead Dentist, or Assistant Dental Chief at their clinic.

Duties:

  1. Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity
  2. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions
  3. Administer local anesthesia
  4. Perform routine and complex restorations of teeth
  5. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth
  6. Perform alveoplasty and other routine surgical procedures
  7. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed bridgework.
  8. Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth
  9. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures
  10. Provides collaboration with dental staff assigned to their clinic location
  11. Responsible for clinic administration in compliance with VHA, Medical Center, and Dental Service Directives, Policies, and Procedures
  12. Assists supervisor in everyday activities and requirements of the dental service
  13. Has the ability to use Vista Applications when appropriate

Work Schedule: 4 days per week; 10 hour shifts Monday - Friday 7:00AM - 5:30PM; actual days worked depends upon needs of the clinic.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Dentist Basic Requirements

  • A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: Experience in Endodontics

Physical Requirements: The incumbent should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 4 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position. See VA Directives and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service.
