Help

The selectee of this position works as a crewmember involved in the housekeeping, minor repair, and upkeep of government roads, parking lots, facilities, and buildings. The selectee receives oral and written instructions from the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, or appointee, and is responsible for safely and efficiently carrying out the assigned duties and completing daily assigned work tasks. Operates and maintains light vehicles, to haul equipment, supplies and tools, or plow snow. Selectee is responsible for custodial maintenance of visitor facilities, trash collection, and recycling. Duties may also include park housing maintenance including cleaning and seasonal use readiness. This position may assist in minor repairs and maintenance duties of same locations including duties such as carpet cleaning, painting, tile floor waxing. This position may require heavy physical effort and stamina to assist with snow removal operations on sidewalks, parking lots, and visitor access locations using manual and mechanical methods. Selectee will frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance, continually walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pulling and pushing. The work may be outdoors and may be in temperatures ranging from extreme cold (below zero) to warm (75F). As needed, the selectee may also work as a flagman on road projects, pick up litter, load / unload supplies / furniture, assist with building maintenance and janitorial duties. The selectee must be able to operate gasoline- or diesel-powered equipment including snow blowers, pickup truck plow, ATV plow, and/or skid steer loader after proper instruction and certification.

All Custodial certificates must list the preference eligible first, then a certificate of non-preference eligible may be issued.

AREA INFORMATION: Wind Cave National Park is located in the southern Black Hills of southwest South Dakota. Climate extremes range from sub-zero temperatures during winter to over 100 degrees during summer. Medical and dental services, schools K-12, shopping, and churches of most faiths are available in Hot Springs (12 miles) and Custer (20 miles). Housing for rent or purchase is available in Hot Springs and Custer. Rapid City, SD (pop:60,000) is one hour north of Hot Springs and has a full range of services available. SCREEN OUTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Performed the most difficult and complex laborer and custodial/janitorial tasks including ability to operate trucks and trailers weighing up to 10,000 pounds; properly loading and unloading various supplies and equipment; to perform work providing laboring assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, cleaning restrooms, windows, vacuuming carpets, floors, emptying trash and recyclables; operate power equipment such as floor scrubbers, floor buffers and floor strippers; and safely use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, etc. Able to safely operate these vehicles/equipment in all types of traffic and weather conditions. Utilize most hand and power tools associated with these tasks including light hand and power and cleaning custodial tools. Use plumbing wrenches and channel locks to tighten loose or leaking fittings; repairs to water heaters, washing machines, lift stations, and other miscellaneous plumbing fixtures such as drinking fountains, water refill stations, pumps, compressors and condensing coils; replace washers or gaskets, and filters. Have experience performing operator maintenance on all vehicles/equipment operated (e.g. monitoring fluid levels, and checking tire pressure). Inspect and replace backcountry trail signage, repair trail water crossings and trail erosion. Perform these duties as an expert with a high degree of independence. My supervisor assigned work orally, through work orders, or with written specifications. My work was checked to see that it met compliance with work and safety standards and policies.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: This position requires that the incumbent possess a valid Driver's License.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate, heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.

This position operates light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, UTVs) on a regular and recurring basis to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites. The vehicles operated are drive on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules and standard routes throughout the park under limited traffic conditions at low speeds.
