Supervise staff by setting and adjusting short/long term priorities and assigning work to subordinates based on the priorities, assignments, and available skills.
Develop performance objectives and evaluates the work performance of subordinates
Approve staff absences and certifies timecards.
Check to ensure patients have been prepped for surgery, and that there are no signs of respiratory, viral, clinical infection, or skin disorders that may delay or cancel surgery.
Select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards, and/or conferring with physician or charge nurse.
Open instrument sets, pours solutions, set up equipment, and makes adjustments to such equipment as electric coagulators, electric bone saws, operating microscopes, air power drills, defibrillators, and resuscitators.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal Drug Free Workplace Programs.
Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
Incumbent will undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, on-call or special situations.
This position requires to move to different departments to support mission requirements.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing two or more of the following: (1) preparing equipment and supplies based on specific surgical procedure(s); (2) assisting with the sterilization of surgical instruments while maintaining a sterile operating room; or (3) assisting surgeon or staff members during surgical procedures or (4) training or mentoring other staff members. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
