Duties

Help
  • Provide emergency services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment.
  • Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene.
  • Identify nature of emergency, level of response required based on local protocols, and provide any additional information to the responding units.
  • Monitor computerized fire alarm system and other alarm systems such as Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (ICIDS) alarm systems.
  • Maintain an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
  • Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, telephones, radios, and station alert systems.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
  • Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regular scheduled time.
  • May be required to wear a uniform.
  • Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Emergency Medical Dispatch based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.
  • Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
  • Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100,300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
  • Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
  • The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This is a drug testing designated position; drug testing is mandatory prior to being placed into this position and randomly thereafter.
  • This position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization.
  • The incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. This recruitment provides promotion opportunity to the target grade of the position without further competition when selectee is eligible and recommended by management.

Specialized Experience required at the GS-05 level:

One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) assisting with obtaining basic information from callers in a centralized public safety communications center; and 2) entering routine incident information into an automated system. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (NOTE: Must provide transcripts).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience required at the GS-06 level:

One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls within a centralized public safety communications center using established procedures; 2) operating emergency communications and computer-aided dispatch equipment to assist with dispatching public safety resources; and 3) relaying incident updates to callers and/or responding public safety personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-5).

Specialized Experience required at the GS-07 level:

One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) answering emergency and non-emergency calls within a centralized public safety communications center; 2) determining the level of emergency to dispatch appropriate police, fire or emergency medical assets using computer-aided dispatch capabilities; and 3) assisting with performing crisis intervention with distraught callers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Proficiency Required: In addition to the requirements above, this position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.

Education

Some federal positions allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you may only substitute education for experience at the GS-05 level. These substitutions are outlined above in the qualifications section.
