As Dispatcher (Public Safety), GS-2151, your typical work assignments may include, but not limited to:

Performing assigned job responsibilities in a manner consistent with total quality management principles that promote peak performance and services delivery to our client Indian population. This position serves in a Law Enforcement Communications Center that provide the following services:

  • Provide full services 24-hours/day, seven days a week.
  • Maintain full on-site access (query and input) to NCIC/NLETS criminal history repositories.
  • Is a public emergency answering point for an Agency area with full emergency response responsibility.
  • Provide Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) by personnel certified by a nationally recognized entity.
  • Serve multiple jurisdictions and/or agencies.

  • A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Selectees must pass a pre-employment medical examination and may be subject to post-employment medical examinations to determine if they are maintaining the fitness standards for this position.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards)

GS-04:
To qualify at the GS-04 grade level you must meet ONE of the following criteria:

A. General Work Experience: One year of general work experience that is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that demonstrates or reflects the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
OR
B. Education: 2 full academic years (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of education beyond the high school level at an accredited college or university.
OR
C. A combination of experience and education that totals 100% of the requirement.

Physical Demands
Incumbent must function efficiently in a confined space for extended periods with no breaks and no opportunity to leave the confines of the Communications Center. The dispatcher is considered an "essential employee", meaning he/she is required to work most holidays, report for duty during adverse weather conditions, and be expected to work for long hours exceeding normally scheduled shifts in case of emergencies. The incumbent is subject to mandatory callbacks and extensions of shift. Position is sedentary with high amounts of mental stress and fatigue. Incumbent is subject to shift work, rotating shift work, and uncommon tours of duty. Work requires use of voice in vocal communications for hours at a time. Voice must be clear, audible, and tone effective with words plainly spoken and understandable. Incumbent must be able to hear clearly and discern a variety of audible communications and signals simultaneously. The work is of an emergency nature and is emotionally stressful. Incumbent must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer terminals/keyboards and related equipment, and to maintain written logs. Work involves occasional lifting of boxes and supplies up to weights of 50 pounds.

Work Environment
The work is normally performed in a well-lit and temperature-controlled room. Noise levels are routinely high due to electronic equipment, telephones, radios, and other discussions ongoing in the performance of duties. The setting is typically confined and secure, and entrance and egress is controlled.
During the training period, the incumbent will be assigned to accompany field law enforcement personnel in patrol vehicles to learn agency field operating procedures and jurisdictional boundaries.

One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. The full performance level of this position is GS-6.
