Duties

Help
  • Operate a variety of machine tools, such as lathes, boring mills, milling machines, grinding machines, screw machines, radial drills, etc.
  • Operate a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine (CNC in the automatic mode).
  • Control machine feeds and speeds.
  • Determine when the fixture, holding, device, cutting tool, or the setup is in need of adjustment.
  • Make minor changes in machine set up, such as, realigning the work piece for different sizes or changes in shape.
  • Check and measure parts.
  • Utilize different cutting tools for successive operations.
  • Saw material on vertical saw and chop saw.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives to determine and obtain materials and cutting tools for the job.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machine Tool Operator ~ without more than normal supervision. This includes performing common Machine Tool Operator tasks, such as operating a variety of standard machine tools (e.g., lathes, boring mills, milling machines, and grinding machines), as well as the capability to operate CNC machines in the automatic mode using pre-programmed feeds and speeds, making only minor adjustments for tool and workpiece size differences. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. The incumbent frequently handles, lifts, and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to lift and move items in excess of 40 pounds, but only with the assistance of coworkers or weight handling devices.
  • Working Conditions: The work is performed inside well-lighted, adequately heated and ventilated shop area.Shop is usually noisy and dirty and there is constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive articles and hot metal. Subject to skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and there is constant danger to fingers, hands, and other body parts from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces, etc. Safety glasses are mandatory and safety shoes are necessary.
