Duties

Help

If selected for this position, you will serve as a Victim Witness Specialist responsible for providing direct assistance and liaison services to crime victims and witnesses to facilitate criminal prosecutions. Typical work assignments will include:

  • Assessing the need for assistance, identifying resources, and providing referrals to crime victims, their families, and witnesses.
  • Assisting United States Assistant Attorneys (AUSAs) in locating victims and witnesses and assessing their ability to testify in court proceedings.
  • Providing in-court support to victims and witnesses during and prior to hearings and trials, including courtroom orientation prior to testimony, facilitating consultations with AUSAs, and assessing safety concerns.
  • Providing victims and witnesses with information about the criminal justice process and court proceedings.
  • Informing victims and witnesses of their rights under Federal law and assisting victims with exercising those rights throughout the prosecution and significant case events.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with law enforcement, victim specialists, and social service organizations at the local, state, and federal level to increase resources and services to serve crime victims and witnesses.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of VICTIM WITNESS SPECIALIST, at GS-0301-11, you must meet the qualification requirements listed below.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least one of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education OR a combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience which has equipped you with the competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: communicating with victims and witnesses to assess their needs; providing routine resource referrals to crime victims, their families, and witnesses; providing routine assistance to crime victims and witnesses before or during court hearings and trials; assisting victims by serving as a liaison with prosecutors; and providing information to victims as to the status of cases and results of trials. OR

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Criminology, Social Work, Psychology): a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.M, if related. (Note: Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.) OR

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education which when combined equals 100% of the requirements. To calculate your percentage of specialized experience, divide the total number of months of specialized experience by 12. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of your graduate hours that exceed 36 semester hours or your school's definition of two years of graduate study, then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 18 or your school's definition of one year of graduate study. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. To qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.
