About the Position: The incumbent performs journeyman level maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems at a high lift lock and dam facility. Performs and participate in a variety of diagnostic inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of associated appurtenances.
Responsible for maintaining the specialized lock and dam equipment, and more typically, building and grounds, equipment systems, and facilities.
Performs journeyman level maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems at a high lift lock and dam facility.
Inspects, adjusts, lubricates, tests, installs, calibrates, and/or performs major and minor repairs at regularly scheduled intervals.
Performs and participates in a variety of diagnostic inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs of associated lock and dam appurtenances.
Maintain project administrative maintenance records in connection with all preventive maintenance and repairs for project mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems, mobile land plant, floating plant and inventory management.
Inspects, troubleshoots, and/or rebuilds electric motors, diesel and gasoline engines of associated equipment at the facility (large mobile cranes, construction type equipment, bulkhead hoists, generators, hydraulic pumps, air compressors, etc.).
Directs vessels approach and entry into the lock chamber.
May be assigned as a primary credit cardholder responsible for purchasing parts, materials and supplies for project operation and maintenance requirements.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position meets the criteria for pre-employment and random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination, which focuses on overall mental and physical health such as the ability to lift 50 lbs, to stand 8-10 hours/day, and to work outside in differing weather conditions.
Individual Districts may determine this position to be Mission Essential based on site-specific conditions. A designation of "Mission Essential" will be
communicated by management to the incumbent(s) if applicable.
Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.
Incumbent may also be required to have a valid state drivers license based on job related, site- specific requirements.
Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or
eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of a(n) Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic duties such as: Install, repair, disassemble, troubleshoot, and inspect lock and dam equipment and machinery; making repairs to electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical lock and dam equipment through the use of a variety of diagnostic tools, hand tools, measuring devices, schematics, engineering drawings, and manuals; and performing preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems,machinery, and related equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Routinely lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders and poles. Machinery on high lift structures is large and requires the skills of a heavy construction mechanic to effect repair or replacement.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors during the day or night subject to inclement weather,on high structures usually over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical equipment, on scaffolds and from slings or floating plant.Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury, or discomfort and when inside, exposure to moving machinery, electrical circuits and loud noises, and at times, dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing.
