The major duties of the Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Branch Chief) position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Manages a branch responsible for criminal investigations, law enforcement programs, functions, or operations encompassing the overall law enforcement mission of the organization.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and oversees studies and surveys to evaluate branch programs and ensure efficiency and economy of operations.
  • Coordinates projects/programs with management officials in branches and divisions within a directorate at ATF Headquarters and officials from the DOJ or other Federal, State, local law enforcement agencies.
  • Advises the deputy division chief and/or division chief on significant issues and matters pertaining to branch programs and projects, e.g., the impact of new technology, new initiatives, etc.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Supervisory Criminal Investigator position at the GS-14 grade level, candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.

Specialized experience must include all of:

  • Providing leadership and supervision to a team; AND
  • Evaluating programs or projects to analyze, evaluate and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of operations; AND
  • Communicating with all levels of management to include senior officials of any Federal, State, Local, and Private law enforcement agencies.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

In order to be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. Once the announcement closes, a review of your resume and supporting documentation will be conducted by the HR Specialist to determine basic eligibility. In addition to the application, this position requires completion of a standardized assessment known as the Electronic Promotion Assessment System (EPAS). Finally, this position falls under the Merit Promotion Board (MPB) which may include an interview of the competitive candidates.

Current GS-14 eligible applicants will not be required to take the EPAS assessment. Their resumes will be reviewed by a Subject-Matter-Expert panel to determine if they meet the specialized experience requirements of the position.
