Duties

Help
  • Work jointly with the Chief, Range Operations Branch and Facilities manager in the planning, development, and execution of the programs, policies and procedures involved in the safe operation of live fire ranges and training areas.
  • Provide safety review and operational management oversight for functioning Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) Live Fire Ranges and Training Areas.
  • Develop and apply live fire safety hazard analysis techniques to ensure that range safety requirements are adhered to in the scheduling of range use, maintenance, modifications, and installation of ranges and training facilities.
  • Draw and approve Surface Danger Zone diagrams to include minimum/maximum ranges, right and left azimuths of fire, ricochet and dispersion areas for all types of weapon systems.
  • Provide safety related input to the Facilities Manager regarding changes to or new firing requests.
  • Technical authority pertaining to safety related issues for ammunition and explosives during live fire training.
  • Review and identify scheduling issues, analyze hazards, develop and present for review situations requiring exceptions to policy, provide data and report to investigators on live fire and other training incidents.
  • Review and monitor access to ranges, facilities, maneuver land, and live fire through patrol and on-site inspection of ranges, firing points, and activities on the range complex.
  • Requires land navigation skills with maps, GPS, and aerial photographs.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain throughout employment a government driving license.
  • Must be able to walk long distances over uneven terrain while wearing Kevlar/Flak vest sometimes during inclement weather.
  • Position is designated as Mission Essential.
  • Position requires a Tier I Non-Sensitive Background throughout employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting units with planning and conducting live fire
ranges; providing advice regarding the use of the range; and coordinating range scheduling. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as: Management, Safety, Occupational Safety, or Health and Safety. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To complete the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
