This is a Flexible employment category position; guaranteed 0 hours per week but may work up to 40 hours per week depending on the needs of the facility.

Duties

  1. Performs visual inspection, quarantine, identification and disinfection of animals and reports any unusual conditions that require veterinarian attention to supervisor for the control and eradication of communicable animal disease. Notifies the manager or supervisor immediately if an animal needs to be removed from the kennel because the animal becomes ill or endangers the health of other animals. In the event an animal is deemed aggressive, the animal will be cared for in the manner outlined in Misawa AB Aggressive Pet Policy, AFI 32-6001, para. 2.31
  2. Follows feeding and watering schedules of the animals per the owner's instructions. Observes animals for obvious changes and reports to the supervisor. Administers medication as required by vet, owner, or supervisor. Checks for fleas and ticks, and applies flea powder, as required. Bathes animals as required, including but not limited to baths, drying, nail dremeling, and mat removal. Exercises the pets daily within the grounds of the facility
  3. Maintains satisfactory sanitary conditions throughout the facility at all times, to include the immediate removal of pet wastes and the bi-daily cleaning of occupied kennels. Performs basic methods of kennel cleaning, sterilizing, and sanitizing as well as additional tasks needed to perform when cleaning excretions, vomit, stains, mud, and dust. Ensures the safety of the animals and the facility by making routine inspections and checking equipment for proper working order. Reports any maintenance and repair requirements to the supervisor.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work an uncommon tour of duty including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical Effort: Requires frequent lifting and carrying objects weighing 40 pounds. Requires continual standing and walking, frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside and outside. Subject to bites, scratches, animal waste, chapped hands, and extreme temperature changes going in and out of the building to walk dogs.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:
  • Experience in handling and understanding animals and be able to recognize obvious changes of appearance and activity of animals is highly desired.
  • Must be able to identify animals by tattoos, tags, or natural markings such as color or color combinations, and separate or place them together by such criteria as strains, sex, age and size.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighting up to 40 pounds. Must be able to perform basic cleaning, sterilizing, and sanitizing of kennels. Experience involving customer service is highly desirable.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.

Civil service positions are paid for by money appropriated by Congress. NAF money, on the other hand, is self-generated by Air Force clubs, bowling centers, golf courses, and other activities that use NAF employees.
