Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Legal Assistant (OA), you will perform the following duties:

  • Supervise legal assistants and clerical staff to ensure timely support to OPLA attorneys in immigration matters.
  • Track and manage Immigration Court dockets; coordinate docket assignments and obtain information needed for court proceedings
  • Conduct legal administrative support by reviewing and analyzing case materials, collecting cited files, maintaining research aids, and analyzing documents for supportive evidence
  • Prepare and route correspondence and basic motions; assemble documents for court use and for responses to FOIA, congressional, and discovery related requests
  • Enter, research, and audit case data in multiple databases and files to keep immigration case information current

Qualifications

You must demonstrate you meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and the Typing Requirement as noted below.

GS-09: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that includes the following:

  1. Tracking court dockets;
  2. Drafting memoranda such as motions and appeals; and
  3. Gathering data from a variety of databases for review or analysis.
In addition to meeting experience requirements, applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills:
  • 40 words per minute based on a five-minute sample with three or fewer errors

Supervisory Probationary Period: This is a supervisory position. Under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within one year of assignment to this position.
