The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Serve as a seasoned data engineer responsible for developing data ETL pipelines in Python and Spark.
Craft data storage and processing solutions using structured query language (SQL), unstructured query language (NoSQL), and/or commercial cloud services.
Catalog metadata and create automated data quality and integrity checks.
Create and advise on software templates and standards to be used by other offices for their migration to cloud infrastructure.
Receive, evaluate and responds to user requests for special purpose reports drawn from various databases.
All newly appointed employees to the competitive (or excepted) service are subject to a probationary (or trial) period. - Independently developing and optimizing data engineering solutions for large or complex datasets, including ETL/ELT pipelines, APIs, and cloud-based workflows AND
- Integrating data from multiple sources using modern tools such as scripting languages, query languages, APIs, AWS, Azure, NoSQL, or distributed processing technologies. AND
- Implementing data quality, lineage, metadata, security, and governance controls to support analytics, dashboards, automation, AI/ML use cases, and reliable operations.
For the GS-11, you must have one year (full 52 weeks) of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
- Developing and maintaining data pipelines that extract, transform, load, validate, or move data across systems AND
- Using modern data engineering tools such as scripting languages, query languages, APIs, Jupyter or cloud-based notebook environments, version control, and cloud services to clean, transform, validate, and automate data workflows. AND
- Supporting ETL/ELT processes, APIs, dashboards, reporting, documentation, quality checks, and preparation of datasets for analytics or AI/ML use cases
