Duties

Help

Specific duties include:

  • Supervise employees who process death claim awards by directing, planning, prioritizing and assigning work.
  • Advises the Division Chiefs on the daily operation of the Section to include reporting daily operational problems and needs in order to achieve goals and objectives of the Insurance program as they relate to the Death Claims Section.
  • Reviews case work for accuracy and authorizes adjustments and Congressional interest cases; co-signs and reviews all Statement of Cases for technical accuracy.
  • Authorizes and reviews all cases where there is a question of fraud on the part of the insured/beneficiary/payee.
  • Prepares various reports for statistical data and analysis.
  • Approves/disapproves employee leave requests.
  • Develops standards and evaluates employee performance.
  • Interviews candidates and makes recommendations for selection or reassignment;
  • Receives and resolves most employee complaint or grievances, taking appropriate corrective action where necessary.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday - Friday, 6am - 6pm (will discuss tour of duty times with supervisor if hired)

Telework: This position is eligible for situational (ad hoc) telework only. The selectee is required to report to the official duty station each scheduled workday. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement:07/20/2026.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT: As a current/former Federal GS employee you must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

  • For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11 level.
Applicants must submit their most recent Notification of Personnel Action, SF-50:
  • Official SF-50 that shows you held the grade (or higher) for the full performance level of the position you are applying for, or
  • Official SF-50 that shows you held the next lower grade for at least one year for the position you are applying for. Multiple SF-50s may need to be submitted to show this.
Examples of appropriate SF-50s to include which show TIG requirements have been met include:
  • Within grade increases (WGI) at the highest grade held; or
  • Promotions with an effective date that occurred more than one year from the closing date of the job opportunity announcement; or
  • Most recent appointment.
NOTE: Do not submit Award or General Adjustment SF-50s, as they do not provide sufficient information and will not be accepted for the purpose of verifying TIG.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-11) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
  • Technical assignments that are related to claims or benefits processing or eligibility determinations.
  • The interpretation of laws, rules and/or regulations and the analysis of documents to determining eligibility for death benefits
  • Experience in the development, examination, investigation, adjudication, and authorization of claims for disability compensation, disability pension, death compensation, death pension benefits, or life insurance benefits is qualifying.
  • Experience in examining and interpreting laws, regulations, or other directives and determining their applicability to a specific case as they pertain to veterans' death benefits.
  • Experience in the development, examination, and authorization of claims for benefits such as life insurance, pension, or compensation is qualifying.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Full vs. Part-Time Employment: Full-time employment is considered to be at least 35 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited on a pro-rated basis; when including part-time employment in your resume you must specify the average hours worked per week.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

There is no education substitution at the GS-12 grade level.
