As a SECURITY GUARD (Indefinite, May Become Permanent), GS-0085-5 your duties are below.
The incumbent controls access, directs traffic, and checks identification of those persons entering and leaving Federal or State Military Reservation property from a number of assigned areas throughout the state. Detects and reports suspicious activity or situations. Reports all matters, which involve the security and safety of personnel or the protection of property. May be required to direct traffic, maintain roadblocks, block off areas and parking lots for special occasions, or as a measure of traffic control. Responsible for maintenance of physical security, access control, protection of life and property, and crime prevention actions within the jurisdiction of the National Guard in the state in which employed. Incumbent is alert to prevent, detect, and conduct preliminary investigations on trespassers and physical security violations. Independently, or with other physical security personnel, performs assigned tasks on fixed post or on foot patrol, or special physical patrol. Each post and patrol has established boundaries and special responsibilities, but duties generally include:
Standing fixed posts (gates)
Maintaining integrity of assigned posts and areas
Responsible for detention/apprehension of all persons attempting unauthorized entry into Federal or State Military Reservations controlled by the State National Guard.
Performing all traffic control duties as prescribed by assignment and instructions.
Protecting private and public property.
Observing and reporting security violations.
Directing Vehicular Traffic.
Maintaining radio communications as appropriate.
Performing police and fire dispatch duties.
Reporting all routine and extraordinary events, situations, and circumstances to immediate supervisor promptly and accurately.
Preparing written security violation reports and other associated forms, checklist, memoranda, and correspondence.
Remaining at assigned post until properly relieved and inventoried.
Providing assistance to other physical security/police personnel, and military authorities and officers as required.
Upon notification, responds to emergency recall of security personnel to assigned area within a specified time parameter. Attends and participates in scheduled training programs as assigned and Watch briefing prior to beginning work. Maintains cleanliness of assigned workspaces and vehicles. The incumbent provides sworn testimony in Federal, State or Military courts as witness regarding security violations and other matters as required. Incumbent may perform other physical security duties, appropriate to grade and experience as may be required. Incumbent uses and maintains physical security equipment and tools, such as vehicular and portable radios, firearms, side-handled batons, Kevlar helmets, equipment belts and other equipment as assigned.
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires military membership in a compatible military assignment in the Iowa Air National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of this excepted position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

TRIAL PERIOD REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period or 1-year (Veterans Preference Eligibles Only) during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider:

Upon completion of your trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT: Employment is subject to attaining and maintaining a clearance as required by this position. If the selectee does not possess the applicable security clearance when hired, application must be made within 30 days of the start date. Failure to make application for the required security clearance will result in termination of employment.
Failure to complete prescribed courses may be cause for reassignment or termination of FTS.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Experienceperforming or supervising protective service in guarding Government facilities and equipment, protecting individuals, and controlling the movement of traffic.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: GS-0085-5: Must haveexperience in the following:
1 year experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level
Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life.
Experience that provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for this position:
Knowledgeable of Department of Defense, Department of the Army, State and National Guard instructions and regulations relating to security.
Knowledge of specialized operating requirements, methods, and procedures used in safeguarding State or national defense sites. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language to a degree that will ensure prompt, efficient courteous dealings with the National Guard community and the public.
Ability to understand and comply with the criteria for the use of deadly force in protection of personnel and property vital to the defense of the nation.
Ability to carry and qualify with small arms to include 9mm handgun or M-16 rifle or other weapons as determined by the existing needs.
Ability to possess and maintain a valid state drivers license. Must be able to successfully complete Security Training.
Ability to stand both inside and outside fixed posts for during all extremes of weather and temperatures for extended periods of time. Requires rendering salutes and other military courtesies as appropriate.
