Duties

Help
  • Conducts a complete examination of the patient to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the condition and searches for medical alert symbols.
  • Determines treatment priorities for multi-injury patients and utilizes appropriate emergency medical equipment and techniques during transport to a medical facility.
  • Navigates emergency vehicles using the most direct and efficient routes based on current traffic conditions and hospital locations.
  • Cleans and disinfects patient transport vehicles according to established Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) decontamination guidelines.
  • Delivers direct patient care within the hospital's Emergency Department in strict alignment with EMT training and scope of practice.
  • Takes, records, and monitors patient’s baseline vital signs including temperature, blood pressure and pulse.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Work is subject to rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
  • The employee may be required to work overtime to include weekends and federal holidays, out-of-cycle, or unscheduled training or on an emergency basis. The employee may be recalled to duty from scheduled time off.
  • May be required to assume critical and essential personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • Position requires employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing.
  • Requires use of Personal Protective Equipment such as OSHA Level B-D. Employee is required to wear Respiratory protection in hot and cold environments for extended periods of time.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and a government driver's license.
  • Initial hires may be made with a valid state EMT certification; but they must obtain and maintain a National Registry EMT certification within 52 weeks of being hired. (Applicants must upload a copy of their EMT certification to their application).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) responding to accidents or emergencies involving injuries and/or illnesses; (2) conducting examinations to obtain patient vital signs, AND (3) operating a patient transport vehicle. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
