The duties and responsibilities for a Legal Instrument Examiner (Case Processing), GS-0963-8/9 generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform initial and continuing review of a large variety of complex legal documents
  • Assess and correct appellate case files for completeness, deficiencies, or other legal requirements
  • Conduct extensive searches of records, references, or historical material to obtain needed information before sending on to the attorney
  • Conduct legal and process analysis of patterns and trends to ascertain fundamental fairness in case processing

  • You may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for the Legal Instrument Examiner (Case Processing) position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

FOR THE GS-08 LEVEL:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside the Federal service), performing 3 or more of the following duties:

  1. Reviewing legal or administrative documents, case files, and supporting records to ensure compliance with policies and procedures;
  2. Processing and maintaining case information in tracking systems to ensure accurate records, and support timely case processing;
  3. Organizing case files, legal records, and supporting documentation; and
  4. Monitoring reports and case documentation to track deadlines, communicate case status, and support legal or administrative operations.

FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside the Federal service), performing 2 or more of the following duties:
  1. Examining and processing complex legal or administrative documents to verify accuracy, resolve documentation issues, and support the timely processing of cases;
  2. Coordinating with attorneys and stakeholders to obtain information, clarify documentation, and support case preparation and resolution; and
  3. Analyzing case information and maintaining case management databases to prepare reports, monitor case status, and support the effective management of legal or administrative matters.

Conditions of Employment: Only U.S. Citizens or Nationals are eligible for employment with the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Dual citizens of the U.S. and another country will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All DOJ applicants, both U.S. citizens and non-citizens, whose job location is with the U.S., must meet the residency requirement. For a total of three (not necessarily consecutive years) of the five years immediately prior to applying for a position, the applicant must have: 1) resided in the U.S., 2) worked for the U.S. overseas in a Federal or military capacity; or 3) been a dependent of a Federal or military employee serving oversees.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants applying under Delegated Examining (all U.S. citizens) procedures will be evaluated under DOJ's Category Rating and Selection Procedures. The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) seeks highly-qualified individuals to join our team of expert professionals in becoming a part of our challenging and rewarding Agency. The primary mission of the EOIR is to adjudicate immigration cases by fairly, expeditiously, and uniformly interpreting and administering the Nation's immigration laws. Under delegated authority from the Attorney General, EOIR conducts immigration court proceedings, appellate reviews, and administrative hearings. EOIR consists of three adjudicatory components: The Office of the Chief Immigration Judge, which is responsible for managing the Immigration Courts where Immigration Judges adjudicate individual cases; the Board of Immigration Appeals, which primarily conducts appellate reviews of these Immigration Judge decisions; and the Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer, which adjudicates immigration-related employment cases.
