Duties

Help

The duties and responsibilities for a GS- 1530-11/12 generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participates in or manages complex data collection projects that employ a variety of collection methods.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements data collection projects related to cooperative and interagency agreements.
  • Generates tables and graphical displays of data that are well organized and follow the organization's data quality and style guidelines.
  • Analyzes a variety of data sets using appropriate statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA or R; applies statistical software to develop program code.
  • Performs statistical verification including review of program code and text-to-table verification.
  • Prepares studies and technical reports for publication and dissemination.
  • Reviews Federal, state, and local data sources, including statistical and research reports to provide a framework for reference and comparison.
  • Consults with other professionals concerning on-going and established statistical studies or other projects where extensive methodological or subject-matter advice and interpretation is required.
  • Writes, modifies and/or edits statistical reports that include the analysis and evaluation of varied technical problems and issues.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Statistician (Social Science), at GS-1530-11/12, you must meet the qualification requirements listed below.

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

GS-11: Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Drafting survey and data collection instruments.
  • Performing a variety of routine data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation activities, and drafts findings/reports. Providing information on standard aspects of criminal justice data and analyses.
  • Participating in the presentation of statistical findings to a wide range of audiences.
GS-11: Substitution of Education for Experience: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. if related.
GS-11: Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

GS-12: Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:
  • Performing a variety of data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation tasks, and preparing findings/reports.
  • Proposing and recommending improvements in survey methodology, format, and drafting and reviewing survey instrument development.
  • Participating in monitoring, oversight, and analyses of statistical programs developed in and outside the organization.
  • Presenting statistical findings in a professional and independent manner to a wide range of audiences; developing data sets and documentation that meet agency requirements for dissemination.
  • Cleaning, weighting, and evaluating the quality of data.
