The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Mechanic, Work Leader within the Facilities Management Service. Reports to Maintenance Supervisor at the Lake Nona, Lake Baldwin and Viera Clinics. The primary duties include furnishing leadership and direction to a multi-craft team that complete the day-to-day operations maintenance and repairs throughout the OVAHCS Main Campus and off-site business offices for Outpatient Clinics.

Performs the following duties as assigned:

  • The incumbent is responsible for accomplishment of the work assignments within the schedule established by Maintenance & Operations Shop Supervisor and the Maintenance and Operations Foreman.
  • The incumbent accomplishes his/her tasks with little or no supervision.
  • Work assignments are by planned projects and oral instructions.
  • The incumbent is responsible for reviewing maintenance and
    repair plans, monitoring preventative maintenance work tasks, and inspection of the daily work tasks
    performed by the Maintenance Shop employees across all campuses.
  • Ensures workers are aware of proper trade techniques and practices and explains safety precautions to be followed while setting up machinery and equipment, and giving instruction in the use of layout techniques, power tools, materials, measuring devices, precision instruments, and safety devices.
  • Has the ability to effectively communicate and answer questions and inquiries of other supervisors and members of the Leadership Team on overall work operations and problems.
  • Works alongside subordinate workers and sets the pace for the assigned crew.
  • The work leader must have technical knowledge of the subordinate's trade practices to efficiently lead and work
    alongside the assigned team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Work Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm -11:30pm, 11:00pm -7:30am or Sunday to Thursday 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm-11:30pm, 11:00pm -7:30am or Monday to Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm, 3:00pm - 11:30pm, 11:00pm - 7:30am.
Note-Exact TOD for this position will be discussed during the interview and may be adjusted to meet the facility/dept needs.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Maintenance Mechanic Leader covers duties across various trades such as carpenters, painters, sign
painters, plumbers, pipefitters, locksmiths, HVAC mechanics, and electricians which are required to engage in significant physical effort. These roles commonly involve standing for extended periods, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders or scaffolding, and working in uncomfortable positions. Handling tools and materials that often weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) is frequent, with occasional requirements to move heavier items using assistance or lifting devices. Tasks are performed in both shop and on-site environments, with some trades like locksmiths and HVAC mechanics maneuvering larger equipment, necessitating the use of hoists and pulleys. Physical stamina and manual dexterity are essential as they operate tools for extended periods, sometimes in cramped, hard-to-reach spaces. Visual and sensory perception along with hand-eye coordination is required to detect deficiencies; make repairs; diagnose problems; and make installment of devices, equipment, parts, etc.

Working Conditions
Working conditions vary but generally involve exposure to moderate to high noise levels, dust, fumes, dirt, and potential weather extremes when tasks are performed outdoors. Workers may face risks from hazardous locations, such as scaffolds, ladders, and confined spaces like attics and crawl spaces. They are also prone to cuts, bruises, burns, and strains, with some exposure to potential chemical hazards like refrigerants. Personal protective equipment (PPE) including ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, and respirators are commonly required, especially in patient care areas to safeguard against air or bloodborne pathogens.
