This position is located in the Facilities Management staff at the National Gallery of Art. The incumbent functions as a Painter who employs skilled techniques in the preparation of a variety of surfaces and in the application of coating materials to obtain a desired result. 

Duties for this position include:

  •  Paints both interior and exterior surfaces such as offices, corridors, stairwells, floors, hallways, cabinets, bookcases, walls, windows, gutters, and cornices.  Surfaces may be wood, metal, glass, fiber, concrete, or plastic and may require one or more of a variety of coating materials such as paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, lacquer, stain, bonding agents, pre-coating material, epoxy resin or other special application. 
  •  Prepares surfaces for new coating materials and removes the old finish, if neccessary, by sanding, scraping, brushing, or by using steel wool, paint remover or burning.  Builds up, shapes and levels surface with plastics, patching compounds, synthetic resins and by applying pre-coating agents such as alkali compounds. 
  • Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing various additives to achieve the desired colors/tones/shades. Applies the coating material using accepted trade practices and techniques and ensures that the finish meets the desired requirements for match, texture, thickness and decoration.

Specialized Experience StatementCandidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the WG-08 level in the Federal service or private sector.

Experience in performing a full range of journeyman-level painting and finishing work on interior and exterior surfaces, including walls, ceilings, floors, equipment, and structural components; 

Experience in preparing surfaces by cleaning, sanding, scraping, patching, caulking, and applying primers and sealers to ensure proper adhesion and durability;

Experience operating and maintaining painting tools and equipment; AND

Experience following all applicable safety procedures, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials (e.g., led-based paint, solvents, and coatings).

Painting: Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to apply paint and other protective coating materials on drywall, wood, metal, glass, and other surfaces.
