Duties

Help

As a Conservator Technician, you will:

  • Complete conservation treatments of a variety of complexities under the direction of a supervisory conservator
  • Construct custom housings to specifications provided by a supervisory conservator or box team lead.
  • Document treatments using a checklist or narrative report
  • Undertake routine lab activities to support unit-wide conservation activities, such as maintaining equipment, preparing supplies, and monitoring inventories.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience for the GS-07: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-06 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Examining records to recognize the fragility and characteristics of paper and other archival media and binding materials. Examples of this experience include: Demonstrating knowledge of the history of paper manufacture and assessing the condition of paper documents by describing damages through a survey or report.
AND
  • Determining vulnerable parts of records that need protection or stabilization and carrying out conservation treatments on archival records in a laboratory setting while adhering to instructions to ensure that documents are handled and treated in conformance with standard procedures. Examples of this experience include: Mending torn paper using long-fibered paper and wheat starch paste, humidification and flattening of rolled documents and fabrication of custom boxes for the storage of paper records.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following requirements, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
Time-in-Grade: For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-06level for 52 weeks.

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
