Duties

Help
  • You will make accurate fire potential determinations, plan and coordinate suppression efforts, and assign tactical duties to personnel during wildland fire suppression efforts.
  • You will make efficient and effective use of multiple types of wildland fire suppression resources and monitor weather and fire behavior during suppression efforts.
  • You will assist with the implementation of an annual aggressive prescribed burning program on approximately 15,000 acres of commercial forestland, ranges and impact areas, update prescribed burn plans and conduct and document post-burn evaluations.
  • You will ensure the operational readiness and preparedness of all wildland firefighting resources, including firefighting personnel, crawler tractors, engines, fire detection towers, hand tools, hoses and other equipment used.
  • You will restore and maintain habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and will be responsible for monitoring operations to ensure habitat restoration goals and objectives are met.
  • You will be responsible for implementing all phases of the insect and disease management program and in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, trap and monitor gypsy moth populations and other non-native insect populations.

  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to posses and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Vehicle Operators Identification C/OF 346 for 4x4 vehicles.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to work fluctuating hours, overtime, and standby time during fire season and other periods of high fire danger.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • You will be required to possess and maintain current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4), Single Resource Engine Boss (ENGB), and Single Resource Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB) certifications.
  • You will be required to take and pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT) annually at the Moderate level or higher. The Moderate fitness level requires completing a two (2) mile hike within thirty (30) minutes, while carrying a twenty-five (25) pound pack.

Qualifications

GS-08:Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Planning and executing wildland fire suppression activities, prescribed burning, and treatment of hazardous fuels in the Wildland-Urban Interface. Examples of qualifying experience include:

  • Forestry aid or technician work.
  • Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment.
  • Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use.
  • Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

Education

In lieu of the specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, applicants may qualify for the position based on education OR equivalent combination of experience and education as follows:

GS-07 ONLY:

  • I have successfully completed one full year of graduate-level education which is directly related to the work of the position OR
  • I have a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent
