Help

The incumbent maintains operational readiness and safety of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment and serves as a technical resource in the maintenance and operation of grounds and snow-removal equipment.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment systems including engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel, hydraulic, brake, steering/suspension, electrical, air conditioning, and lift/positioning systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on tractors, grounds equipment, snow-removal equipment, hydraulic equipment, industrial equipment, and small-engine equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and accepted trade practices. Services include tune-ups, brake replacement, fluid changes, carburetor rebuilds, starter repairs, hydraulic repairs, and seasonal equipment servicing.
  • Operates tractors, mowers, snow-removal equipment, and related grounds equipment on an incidental basis to support equipment testing, maintenance verification, snow removal, and operational requirements.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and inventory records for all assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Manages stock levels of spare parts, supplies, and equipment for tractors, mowers, and vehicles. Uses hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing devices to perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support Facilities Management Service operations.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work requires heavy physical effort, with frequent lifting and moving heavy equipment and materials. Work often requires tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent may stand for long periods of time, bending, stooping, be under vehicles or in tight spaces to make repairs. incumbent must be in good physical condition and ableto lift 75 lbs. routinely.

Working Conditions:Incumbent works outside in hot, cold and rainy weather, possibly for long periods of time Incumbent is continually exposed to dirt dust and grease and to potential burns chemical irritations shocks bruises cuts and strains Incumbent may be requested to report to work at any time to help with emergencies or snow removal.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
