Help

The Supervisory MSA has full responsibility for supervising subordinate Advanced Medical Support Assistant within the service. The incumbent is responsible for assuring accurate appointment management and the coordination of all administrative information between the professional staff and the patient.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate the work of subordinate staff.
  • Assure accurate appointment management and the coordination of all administrative information between the professional staff and the patient.
  • Evaluate performance and taking disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with facility programs, services, and interprofessional coordinated care team members to facilitate access to care through focused efforts on meeting the needs of Veterans via various available contact modalities to include but not limited to telephone calls, secure messaging, chat, text messaging and videoconferencing.
  • Identify educational or training needs.
Work Schedule: 7:30am-4:00pm or 8:00am-4:30pm

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience: None.
  • Education: High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State of territorial-level Board of Department of Education
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration. None.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above, the following experience criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

Supervisory Medical Support Assistant, GS-08.
  • Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs
    • Advanced knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and to empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
    • Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties in a patient support setting, which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
    • Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.
    • Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training related to administrative functions in a patient support setting.
    • Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs.

Preferred Experience: Clinical Scheduling Management, Supervision Experience, Critical Thinking, Organizational Stewardship

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.

Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary. It typically requires sitting with sustained periods of concentration. There will be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of relatively light objects. The position may also require stooping, reaching, lifting, pulling, and other moderate exertion or strain. Incumbent may occasionally have to walk some distance to a meeting.
