This position is located within the Environment Services Division of the Bath VA Medical Center. This position is under the direct supervision of the Laundry Supervisor or designee. This position performs clean and soiled linen processing, uniform processing, linen collection, and data entry of linen counts. Work is regularly performed by hand, push carts, feed linen into machines (conveyors, folders, ironers) for finish processing.

Duties

Help

The Laundry/Linen Worker executes full range of linen activities in patient and non-patient care areas. The position may be assigned to any tour of duty and may be required to work in various designated areas during any tour of duty. Typically, the positions works independently with general supervision, or works as a team and responsible for laundry duties in the laundry plant. These duties include, but are limited to the following:

Collect soiled linen from designated demarcation points and bring to a central location for pick up. Presort linen, personal clothing, mops, and cleaning cloths before sending to laundry. Assist with loading truck for transport to laundry. Incumbent will, at the discretion of the Laundry Plant Supervisor, assist in the processing of soiled linen. This includes but not limited to, dumping soiled linen onto conveyer, washing empty linen carts and returning to truck, sort soiled linen from the conveyer to the designated bins or tubs. Load trucks at laundry plant in preparation to designated facility. Assist with unloading trucks at designated facility. Assist with Properly placing clean primary linen in linen room in preparation for distribution. Inventory primary linen room and submit requests for linen replenishment based on current needs. Inventory secondary linen rooms and deliver clean linens based on established PAR levels.
Incumbent will, at the discretion of the Laundry Plant Supervisor, assist in the processing of clean linen. This includes but not limited to; Using the laundry equipment for folding linens, manually folding linens, properly loading carts for shipment based on requests and availability, ensure clean / soiled carts are weighed and documented and communicate any identified issues or concerns with processing clean linen such as safety or machine failures. NOTE: Pajamas, gowns, fall protection, and lift harnesses are considered linen for processing.

Receive, unpack as needed or prepare for storage. Mark new linens as required. Prepare new linen for wash.

Prepares lines for processing through flatwork ironer. Feeds linens in ironer, towel and blanket folders. Moves folded linens to cart in preparation of being shipped out. Identifies and segregates linens that are stained or torn beyond serviceability. Folds roughdry linens, counting and stacking items in preparation of shipment.

Sort soiled uniforms / personal clothing and prepare for wash. Fold and/or hang clean uniforms / personal clothing, sent through garment dryer as needed, prepare for shipment. Uniforms / personal clothing is to be prepared right side out. Local uniforms / personal clothing is to be delivered to its destination. Operates garment finishing machine by hanging shirts, trousers, and coats on hangers. Hangs finished items on rack in preparation of being shipped out. Collect new personal clothing from CLC's as needed. Label uniforms / personal clothing as required.

Incumbent will be expected to access, add, update, or delete electronic records including but not limited to; Uniform request, issue, and return tracking. Surveyed uniforms and linens tracking. Commensurate to tracking records, incumbent will be required to; Acquire electronic signatures for uniforms issued, search existing records as needed, assist personnel inquiring on uniform requests as needed.

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Saturday -Sunday off

Physical Requirements: The position demands continuous walking, standing, pulling, and pushing. The work requires occasional pushing of linens carts weight over 300 lbs. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination and concentration while working around laundry machines.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
