Duties

Help

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains a variety of uncomplicated heating equipment and systems that do not have complex maintenance requirements.
  • Assists with installing, modifying, testing, repairing, and maintaining equipment, such as power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems used to condition areas and to cool equipment.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air conditioning units.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: A High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred. Completion of an accredited Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Apprenticeship or vocational training program is desired but not always required. Normal color vision and a valid Florida driver's license will be required. A basic understanding of standard methods of combustion, heat transfer principles, and fuel characteristics to install, repair, and maintain heating boilers and domestic heating units and systems. A basic knowledge of pneumatics, electricity, and basic electronics to locate faults in temperature controls and control devices. Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks without restrictions (lifting 50 lbs. unassisted frequently). Strong work ethics, reliability, and punctuality are essential qualities for this role.
Our ideal candidate is someone with integrity who takes pride in their work but also is a TEAM player. Has basic knowledge in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications. Adherence to all facility work rules, safety, and housekeeping/cleanliness. Has basic knowledge of refrigeration principles. Basic skill in the use of common precision measuring devices, such as calipers and micrometers and a basic knowledge of pipe fitting techniques. Demonstrates proper use of hand and power tools such as drills, saws, and soldering irons. Time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of basic principles of the classified titled or related field.
2. Skill in communicating factual and procedural information and procedural information clearly, orally and in writing.
3. Ability to learn basic techniques of the classified title.
4. Ability to analyze problem to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions.
5. Ability to plan and organize work, and consult effectively with co-workers.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
