Duties

Help
  • Performs ophthalmic clinical support duties by collecting patient complaints, symptoms, and relevant history to prepare individuals for provider evaluation.
  • Measures visual acuity, refractometry results, intraocular pressure, color vision, pupillary responses, and other screening data using automated and manual ophthalmic equipment to support diagnostic assessment.
  • Performs routine diagnostic tests such as keratometry, pachymetry, lensometry, visual field screening, contrast sensitivity, glare testing, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to obtain accurate clinical data for provider interpretation.
  • Prepares exam rooms, instruments, and supplies to ensure a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
  • Performs complex but non-invasive ophthalmic diagnostic testing by operating specialized equipment such as automated refractors, visual field analyzers, OCT units, and retinal imaging systems to collect high-quality diagnostic data.
  • Serves as the first surgical assistant and scrub assistant during major and minor ophthalmic surgeries, supporting the surgeon through sterile preparation and instrument management.
  • Assists providers during minor ophthalmic procedures by preparing instruments, setting up equipment, and maintaining clean technique as appropriate.

  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent may be required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting surgeons during major and minor ophthalmic surgeries; performing ophthalmic clinical support duties by collecting patient complaints, symptoms, and relevant history; and operating specialized equipment to collect diagnostic data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
