Duties

Help
  • You will assist senior industrial hygienists in conducting routine surveys of industrial, maintenance, and administrative workspaces.
  • You will calibrate, maintain, and operate standard industrial hygiene sampling equipment (e.g., air pumps, noise dosimeters).
  • You will collect environmental samples and record precise field data for laboratory analysis.
  • You will conduct occupational health and safety training for military and civilian personnel on hazard recognition and prevention.
  • You will investigate complex and diverse workplace environments involving multiple, concurrent hazards (e.g., toxic chemicals, extreme noise, heavy metals).
  • You will manage and direct a comprehensive installation-wide or command-wide industrial hygiene program.

Qualifications

For the GS-05 Level:

  • Applicants who meet the Basic Education Requirement (BELOW) are fully qualified for the GS-05 level. No additional experience is required.

For the GS-07 Level: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience assisting higher-graded industrial hygienists with health hazard evaluations;
  • Experience calibrating and using common industrial hygiene sampling instrumentation;
  • Experience assisting in drafting portions of survey reports.
For the GS-09 Level: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience independently planning and conducting routine industrial hygiene surveys;
  • Experience using quantitative measurement techniques to evaluate environmental stresses (e.g., noise, ventilation, chemicals);
  • Experience recommending control measures to eliminate or reduce occupational health hazards.
For the GS-11 Level: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience planning and executing comprehensive industrial hygiene programs or studies;
  • Experience evaluating worksites with complex work processes or chemical compounds where standard guidelines may not apply;
  • Experience serving as a technical advisor to management regarding compliance with OSHA and agency occupational health standards.
For the GS-12 Level: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience serving as an authoritative expert in industrial hygiene;
  • Experience developing and issuing policy directives, guidelines, or abatement plans for complex, large-scale industrial or maintenance operations; evaluating synergistic effects of health hazards;
  • Experience representing the agency in interagency meetings, hearings, or negotiations regarding compliance with environmental and occupational health regulations.

Education

Applicants must meet the Basic Education Requirement.

BASIC REQUIREMENT (Applies to all grade levels)

You must meet one of the following basic requirements:

  • A. Degree: A bachelor's or higher degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science.

  • OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included:

    • At least 12 semester hours in chemistry (including organic chemistry), AND

    • 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. (Note: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable).

  • OR C. Certification: Possess a current Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)).

    Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.


    In Lieu of Experience the following Education

    GS-07:
    One (1) full year of graduate-level education related to the position. OR Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): A bachelor's degree in a qualifying field with a GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 or meeting other SAA criteria. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience.

    GS-09:
    A Master's or equivalent graduate degree, OR two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field related to the position. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience.

    GS-11:
    A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, OR three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field related to the position. OR Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience.

    GS-12:
    No educational substitution is permitted for specialized experience at this grade level.
