Duties

Help
  • Troubleshoot and repair boiler systems and equipment such as steam pipes, condensate pumps, and replace valves within a medical treatment facility (MTF).
  • Install and repair equipment such as sinks, faucets, toilets, pumps, boilers, and pipes within a MTF.
  • Maintain burners, burner nozzles, and orifice assemblies for boiler systems.
  • Dismantle, clean and reassemble small boilers yearly for annual certification.
  • Identify defects within boiler systems for a MTF.
  • Dismantle, reassemble, and reinstall components within a variety of boiler systems.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated Weather Essential. In the event of inclement weather conditions the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate government vehicles.
  • This position requires incumbent to be fit tested for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex boiler plant equipment mechanics such as installing, maintaining, and repairing boiler plant system components. I am skilled in testing the operation of power boiler systems in order to identify malfunctions and potential problems. I can complete preventative maintenance on boiler plant systems and equipment such as boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, and air compressors. I can install insulation on various steam and chill water lines dealing with steam boilers. I am skilled in the operation of a service truck/utility vehicle. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Heating equipment repairers work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing. They occasionally work from scaffolds and platforms and may perform strenuous work while standing, sitting, or lying. They frequently lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and occasionally items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers.
  • Working Conditions: The work is usually performed indoors on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, heat, steam, noise, and unpleasant odors. Repairers occasionally service equipment outdoors under adverse weather conditions. They are continually exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire retardant gloves.
  • Preferred but not required: American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Medical Gas Certification.
