Job Summary:

  

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff.  The CAO organization comprises more than 800 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

  

This paid internship is located within the Office of Finance, Office of Financial Counseling, under the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Office of Finance is responsible for delivering exceptional financial management services to Members of Congress, House officers, committees, and support organizations. Through its commitment to being Member-Focused and Service-Driven, the Office of Finance safeguards the integrity of House operations while ensuring responsible stewardship of public resources.

  

The Office of Finance consists of six directorates: Accounting, Asset Management, Financial Counseling, Payroll & Benefits, Budget Planning & Analysis, and the Finance Immediate Office. The directorates collaborate to support the financial operations of the House.

  

The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in federal financial management within a fast-paced and mission-driven environment. Interns will work alongside experienced finance professionals, participate in special projects, and gain exposure to a broad range of financial functions that support the legislative branch of government. This position does not have day-to-day supervisory/managerial responsibilities.  

* Paid at an annual rate of $36,834 not to exceed 120 days 

  

** The CAO standard business hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week internship that will require onsite attendance in Washington, D.C. 

  

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Support projects and strategic initiatives within the Office of Financial Counseling. 
  • Assist Financial Counselors with the review and processing of Member and committee vouchers for compliance with House policies and regulations. 

  • Supporting House Finance Card program administration through account monitoring, transaction review, reconciliation, and reporting. 

  • Assist with customer service inquiries from Members, committees, officers, and staff regarding financial policies, procedures, and available resources. 

  • Support outreach and educational initiatives by assisting with training sessions, informational materials, and communication campaigns. 

  • Job shadow Financial Counselors to gain exposure to Member services, financial operations, policy interpretation, and compliance activities. 

  • Prepare presentations, briefing materials, spreadsheets, reports, and other business documents. 

  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • High school diploma 
  •  Associate degree or certification from an accredited business or technical school, or enrolled student in a community college, junior college, university or graduate school program. 
  •  This is a full-time, in-person position, 40 hours a week, M-F. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, or related discipline. 
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 

  • Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
