  • Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Serve as the Center’s Emergency Mishap Coordinator, and primary Point of Contact during real time emergencies to facilitate and engage in incident communication, coordinate operational decisions, and ensure alignment with AFRC executive leadership.
  • Manage the Center’s Mishap Program and lead mishap response coordination efforts with Edwards AFB Leadership and other stakeholders, ensuring unified command, synchronized response actions, and accurate information flow across all mission partners.
  • Analyze ground and aviation-related mishaps, verify root cause and other causal factors for the mishap, and recommend corrective actions for the betterment of the program.
  • Verify Human Factors related to mishaps, analyze trends and provide data to management to help prevent future mishaps and incidents.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all guidance documents related to the Armstrong Mishap program are current and reviewed at appropriate intervals and work with NASA headquarters to ensure that the program is audit ready at any time.
  • Maintain a safety database to track mishap investigation, corrective action implementation and closure status, as well as a list of trained mishaps investigators to respond to incidents and mishaps when needed.
  • Oversee safety program related tasks for support contractor.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:

  • Investigating and determining causal factors for aviation and ground related mishaps;
  • Investigating and determining human-factors as they pertain to aviation and ground related mishaps;
  • Developing messaging and/or training plans to increase safety awareness across an organization.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
  • Supporting emergency response operations, including participation in incident response activities, coordination of real-time actions, and involvement in emergency or mishap exercises;
  • Planning, conducting, and/or supporting investigations of incidents and close calls to identify causes, recommend corrective actions, and improve organizational safety performance;
  • Leading programs, major initiatives, or cross-organizational efforts by independently resolving complex operational challenges and developing innovative methods, processes, and approaches to improve mission effectiveness.
