This position is located at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center within Nutrition and Foods Service. The Supervisory Dietitian (Informatics) oversee the Nutrition Communication Center (NCC) providing administrative and technical supervision to the NCC employees. Supervisory Informatics Dietitians are thoroughly knowledgeable of and have full authority for planning, coordinating, and implementing food service technology into the department.

Help

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plans, directs, and assesses the workload and competency of all subordinate staff.
  • Uses available technology to enhance the work of all employees within NFS.
  • Utilizes electronic programs to produce reports, analyze data and improve personnel efficiency and productivity in the NCC.
  • Enters and maintains ingredient information, recipes, nutritional information, and menus into the technology package.
  • Oversees the technology used for meal production, meal service and temperature control.
  • Leads a menu committee.
  • Signs menus indicating they are approved by a registered dietitian.
  • Completes nutrient analyses of regular and modified menus and ensures menus follow required diet guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains training and reference materials for the NCC.
  • Manages productivity reports for the NCC.
  • Completes audits for the NCC, determining action plans when results require corrective measures.
  • Coordinates and supports downtime procedures for the NCC, ensuring procedures remain up to date.
  • Coordinates all aspects of training related to computer systems, menus, and informatics for NFS employees.
Work Schedule: Full-time, 6:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, Sunday and Monday off

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Dietitian candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD): Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.

Grade Determinations:

GS-11 Supervisory Dietitian (Informatics):

Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must possess at least 1 year of experience as an RDN/RD equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) which demonstrates the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skill in managing computer software programs relative to food service systems.
  • Skill in applying nutritional knowledge to develop menus ensuring nutritional standards are met.
  • Skill in developing training and reference materials.
  • Skill in evaluating data to improve outcomes.
  • Skill in providing training related to food service systems technology.
  • Skill in collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance).

Creditable Experience: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) associated with current professional dietetic practice and must have been gained post registration. This may be evidenced by one or more of the following:

  • The equivalent of 1 year of active professional practice. Active professional practice means paid/non-paid employment as a registered Dietitian.
  • Academic course work leading to an advanced graduate degree in nutrition or a related health care field.

Quality of Experience: Qualifying experience must be comparable to dietetic experience at the next lower grade level of the position being filled. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Part-Time Experience: Part-time experience as a registered Dietitian is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a registered Dietitian employed 20 hours per week, or on a half-time basis, would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
