Major duties include, but are not limited to:

Maintenance Duties:

  • Operates hand tools, small power tools, and electric shop equipment, including drills, saws, staplers, sanders, band saws, and radial saws
  • Assembles furniture and equipment
  • Mounts pictures, bulletin boards, signage, and similar items
  • Installs dispensers, baby changing stations, curtain tracks, and related fixtures
  • Repairs laundry carts and other facility equipment
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs
  • Resets electrical breakers as needed

Motor Vehicle Operator Duties:
  • Transports supplies, equipment, materials, laundry, and personnel throughout the VASNHCS in Northern Nevada Health Care System locations, including sites in Northern Nevada and Northern California
  • Operates a variety of government vehicles, including laundry trucks, vans, passenger buses, automobiles, and other vehicles up to 22,800 pounds gross vehicle weight
  • Performs operator-level maintenance, cleanliness, and routine upkeep of assigned vehicles
  • Transports small quantities of hazardous waste from Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and other designated locations to the main hospital waste site, in accordance with established procedures
  • Assists the Fleet Manager with vehicle-related duties, including transporting fleet vehicles for required maintenance and supporting vehicle readiness
  • Provides basic instruction to employees on the proper operation of fleet vehicles, as needed
  • Operates snow removal equipment, maintenance equipment, and forklifts as required

Work Schedule: Full Time; Monday - Friday 6:30am - 2:30pm.

    • Possess a safe driving record;
    • Possess a valid State license;
    • Except as provided in ยง 930.107, pass a road test; and
    • Demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely in
      accordance with the standards and procedures established in this part.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires prolonged periods of standing and walking on concrete and other hard surfaces while performing warehouse, delivery, and support duties. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting are required in the loading, unloading, movement and placement of supplies, equipment, furniture, and materials. The employee operates motor vehicles using hand and foot controls and may be required to enter and exit vehicles frequently throughout the workday. Moderate physical effort is required on a regular basis, and occasional lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds or more may be necessary with assistance or appropriate material-handling equipment.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a variety of settings, including motor pool facilities, loading docks, warehouses, and outdoor environments. The employee is regularly exposed to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, dust, dirt, and vehicle-related fumes, oils and lubricants. Duties may require working in areas with moving vehicles and equipment and around mechanical and electrical systems.
The position involves adherence to established safety procedures and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment when required. Employee may be exposed to potential hazards associated with operating and maintaining motor vehicles and equipment, loading and unloading cargo, and working in areas with vehicular traffic. Care and attention are required to minimize the risk of injury to self and others.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
