The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing task (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution and training) associated with the EMS goals and objectives.

The incumbent works with staff consisting of Housekeeping Aid Work Leaders and Housekeeping Aids.

Tours of duty may vary depending on the internal department needs with weekdays, weekends, day and evening shift schedules. Incumbent must be able to work independently and may act as the Area/General Foreman in their absence.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Determining the need for and providing training to employees
  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and patient rooms
  • Removing soiled linen from ward areas or clinics using the proper collection methods for handling possible contaminated items
  • Sweeping and mopping floors in high traffic areas such as corridors, restrooms, stairways, entry ways, cafeterias, and other areas
  • Determining and assigning the appropriate number and types of personnel for duties on a daily and project by project basis
  • Assigning deadlines and priorities to subordinate staff and reassigning personnel and resources to accomplish unanticipated work
  • Reorganizing the work schedule efficiently in order that work is accomplished in a timely manner
  • Identifying and keeping management informed of the need for additional resources
  • Performing quality control inspections to ensure the timely and satisfactory completion of housekeeping duties
  • Providing special direction to new employees to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures, and safety policies
  • Scheduling regular meetings with staff to make them aware of new procedures or directives
  • Following sanitation and infection control procedures to prevent the spread of bacteria
  • Reviewing operations, policies, and procedures to ensure program complies with guidelines and regulations and regulatory bodies
  • Keeping subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures, and uses of equipment and supplies
  • Selecting proper equipment to clean floors, carpets, drapes, and light fixtures
  • Operating powered equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines and/or industrial vacuums
  • Using ladders and/or scaffolds to wash ceiling fixtures, washing, or replacing venetian blinds or room partitions
  • Planning for the use of workers, equipment, materials, and tools for housekeeping assignments
  • Adhering to safety policies and procedures while performing manual work
  • Working quickly without accidents while maintaining the quality of work
  • Recognizing health and safety hazards for yourself and other workers around you
  • Using proper lifting techniques when lifting objects especially those that may be bulky and/or awkward
  • Conducting training classes on specific safety issues as needed

Physical Requirements: This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. 40% of time spent standing, 40% of time spent walking and 20% of time spent sitting. Must have average hearing and visual acuity. Is required to use a phone, operate vehicles, and have average manual dexterity. May be required to work outside. May require some exposure to cleaning chemicals.

The work is accomplished in a variety of different areas including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards and other public, recreational and administrative areas. Protective clothing and personnel protective equipment (PPE) including gowns, gloves, safety shoes, The work is accomplished in a variety of different areas including operating rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards and other public, recreational and administrative areas. Protective clothing and personnel protective equipment (PPE) including gowns, gloves, safety shoes, masks, etc. is required in the accomplishment of some aspects of the work. There is the potential for exposure to strong cleaning solutions, bodily fluids and communicable disease. The work can involve occupied patient rooms and interaction with both medical and psychiatric patients.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
