About the Position: You will serve as a highly skilled journeyman level machinist. You will accomplish work in the Machine shop, Moorings yard and adjacent buildings, on floating plants; and may require travel to remote repair sites on an emergency basis.

  • Some of the duties you will perform are as follows:
  • Set up, plan and lay out sequence of work.
  • Machine light and heavy machinery components.
  • Manufacture parts per specifications on standard and specialized machinery and equipment.
  • Establish dimensions to assure specifications are met for each new element.
  • Performs machining in manufacture of castings, forgings, weldments and other fabrications often requiring untried procedures and use of new materials and unique designs.
  • Use a variety of auxiliary attachments such as rotary vises, dividing and vertical milling heads, taper and tapping attachments of rotary tables, etc.
  • Perform precision handwork to finish the machined components within close tolerances.
  • Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance of machine tools.
  • Interpret multi-dimensional drawings, isometric and orthographic sketches, blueprints, schematics, using independent judgment to correct, refine or adjust.
  • Establish missing tolerances, dimensions, and type of fit including hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualified applicants for this position must meet the screen out element. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out) for a Machinist-WG-3414-11. Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision. You must have the ability or potential ability to complete work assignments such as perform the removal and reinstallation of ship components and perform machining operations such as, turning, milling, drilling, and boring. I also have the ability or potential ability to layout work, perform measuring operations utilizing micrometers, dial indicators, intrimik and other precision instruments. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed on site where necessary or inside the machine shop which has concrete floors and is well-lighted and heated. Occasionally works outside and on floating vessels. Travel out of town is occasionally necessary to perform emergency work. Is exposed to dirt, dust, grease, solvents, fumes, inclement weather and usual climate extremes. Subject to noisy conditions caused by power tool operation. There are the dangers inherent to the craft such as cuts and bruises as well as exposure to electrical shocks and burns, and injuries from dropped or slipping tools and parts, and strains from handling heavy items. Must wear customary safety equipment such as ear plugs, safety glasses, and other safety apparel and equipment as required. Maintains good safety practices. Working hours may be of long duration due to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Work requires moderate physical effort: Lifts and carries equipment and supplies normally up to 50 lbs., and on occasion up to 75 lbs. Work requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing and kneeling, all of which can cause exertion of the lower back. May require climbing on scaffolds, ladders and platforms to perform work in cramped, stretched or awkward positions. Must maintain good lower back physical condition.
