  • Compile, develop, and maintain geospatial datasets supporting land and natural resource programs.
  • Enter, edit, and validate geospatial data following established standards.Perform basic spatial analyses to support planning, compliance, and operational needs.
  • Provide maps and analytical products to specialists and managers.

  • Produce maps, figures, and visual materials adhering to cartographic and BLM standards.
  • Review mapping outputs for accuracy, consistency, and clarity.
  • Assist staff with geospatial software use, data requests, and troubleshooting.
  • Communicate data needs and coordinate with other GIS and program personnel.

To qualify for the GS-05:

You must have at least three years of general experience, one (1) year of which was comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) that demonstrates the ability to:

(1) analyzing problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions;
(2) assisting Geographic Information System Specialist, with general data entry and digitizing duties
(3) compiling geographic data from a variety of sources
(4) communicating orally with a variety of audiences in order to present ideas and information in easy-to-understand formats.

Education: I have completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in any field.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate education.

To qualify for the GS-07:

You must possess at least one or more years of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. This experience may include all of the following:

(1) Analyzing problems to identify significant factors, gather relevant geographic data, and determine practical solutions to support GIS project needs.
(2) Assisting senior Geographic Information System Specialists by performing data entry, digitizing spatial features, and conducting basic geoprocessing tasks following established procedures.
(3) Compiling, organizing, and maintaining geographic and attribute data from multiple sources, ensuring accuracy and consistency within GIS databases.
(4) Communicating information clearly and effectively with a variety of audiences to present GIS concepts, data findings, and project updates in an easy-to-understand manner.

Education: I have one full year of graduate level education that included or was supplement by 12 semester hours of course work in a related field which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

I have a Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. that included at least 12 semester hours of course work related to the administration of land laws

To qualify for the GS-09:

You must possess at least one or more years of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. This experience may include all of the following:

(1) digitizing geographic information by translating raw land-based data into code;
(2) compiling geographic data from a variety of sources;
(3) scheduling geospatial hardware and software processing needs and implementing required upgrades;
(4) providing input into contract specifications and scopes of work.

Education: Ihave a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D in a field directly related to the work of the position which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Bureau of Land Management

The BLM manages 245 million surface acres. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska.
