Duties

Help

As a LEGAL ASSISTANT, GS-0986-8, you will perform research in regulations, policies, procedures, case law, opinions, internet sites, etc., to provide assistance to staff attorneys in the development of case files. Review body of laws or regulations to determine legal precedence in assisting case development and documentation assignments in Federal, State, and administrative law claims. Prepare legal summaries to be used as part of the case or trial development. Interview potential witnesses and provide background development summaries of testimonial evidence for attorney review and discussion. Maintain case files and correct file discrepancies. Trace missing documents, acquire needed information, and review records to obtain factual information about a case. Prepare exhibits and verify citations and legal references on prepared legal documents. Provide assistance and information to clients on legal rights, benefits, privileges, or obligations. Assist clients by preparing legal documents such as wills, powers of attorney, claims, voting requirements, loan contracts, motor vehicle registrations, titles, transfers, lien releases, and notary services, etc. Provide assistance to serviced units concerning the administrative preparation, coordination, and implementation of documents regarding military justice. Review documents for procedural adherence to guidelines, initiate corrective actions, and coordinate review of actions by staff attorneys. Provide administrative assistance with courts-martial, non-judicial punishment, drafting charges and specifications in accordance with the UCMJ/State CMJ, preparation of charge sheets, witness subpoenas, court-martial convening orders, convening authority's actions, post-trial warrants of confinement, etc. Perform a variety of administrative/clerical support functions to insure the effective operation of the office and legal assistance program. Perform other duties as assigned.

RANK REQUIREMENT:
Member must provide in writing with their application package that they are willing to accept a reduction in rank in order to be qualified for this position, if applicable. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
You must maintain membership in the Kentucky National Guard.
You must be assigned to a compatible military position.
Wear of the military uniform.
May be subject to furlough actions.
May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
Must obtain and maintain a favorable adjudication of a T3 or equivalent investigation.
Acceptance of a Federal position may terminate a military bonus.
Acceptance of a Federal position will terminate Tricare Reserve Select (TRS) eligibility.
This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:
Experience working with office automation systems, software practices and procedures. Experience in working with various legal assistant support functions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 18 months experience attending and keeping record of legal proceedings. Experience maintaining a court calendar. Experience establishing, maintaining, and closing case files or systems of legal records. Experience annotating indices and status records, compiling workload and status reports.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Resume must have complete dates, work schedule, and/or hours worked per week for both civilian and military employment. (Example: 2 JAN 1980 to 3 MAR 1981; 0800-1630 M-F or JAN 1980 to MAR 1981; 40 hrs/wk) Use of year only and unspecified work schedule will result in disqualification. Each applicant must fully substantiate -in their own words- that they meet 100% of the minimum requirements and specialized experience listed above in detail; otherwise, the applicant will be considered unqualified for this position.
