This position is in Environmental Management Service (EMS), at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV. The incumbent functions at the full journeyman level for dewing machine operation and performs a variety of duties related to textile care operations. The incumbent reports to the Laundry Supervisor.

Current permanent employees of the Department of VA including VA Title 38, Title 38 Hybrid, and Canteen employees serving on excepted appointments covered by the interchange agreement; Career/Career-Conditional appointment; Former competitive civil service employees eligible for reinstatement; CTAP/ICTAP; Veterans Employment Opportunities Act; 30% Disabled Veterans; Veterans eligible under a Veterans' Recruitment Appointment; Employment Program for People with Disabilities.
Operates laundry machines used for a variety of special purposes, including industrial washer/extractor and dryer machines, automated linen folding machines, commercial steam pressers, and sheet spreaders.
Uses the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while sorting and loading washing machines, including an apron, gloves, face shield, etc., to prevent direct contact with bodily fluids, including blood, feces, bacteria, and contagious diseases and viruses.
Sets machine controls on a variety of equipment, for cleaning and finishing purposes. Reports mechanical defects, malfunctions, and low chemical levels to the supervisors.
Moves linens to various areas in the laundry for finishing, Folds, stacks/hangs, and stores textiles neatly and in the designated area.
Repairs and alters linen items and uniforms. Measures and fits employee uniform garments to indicate what adjustments will be made and completes the alterations, making certain that the result does not detract from the fit and original appearance of the garment. Repairs patient care linens that require mending. Sewing operations include hand stitching and operating an industrial sewing machine.
Responsible for the initial issue of all employee uniforms. Maintains accurate records of all uniforms issued as required in VHA 1850.04. Issues, mends, orders, and maintains an inventory of all scrub garments. Issues replacements for all unserviceable employee uniforms and maintains records of uniforms that are salvaged.

Physical Requirements: The work requires lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for long periods of time. The sewing machine work requires sitting for long period of time.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an industrial setting. Incumbent is exposed to noise, heat, humidity, dust, chemicals for cleaning, detergents, bodily fluids, and potentially infectious germs, bacteria, and viruses. Constantly exposed to the possibility of bruises from moving carts, or falls on wet floors in the washing machine area. The employee is exposed to the possibility of needle punctures and minor thread cuts.
