An internship with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers a unique and challenging experience for the highly motivated student. This internship provides opportunity to work on some of the most significant, complex and visible cases being litigated today. Working with Assistant U.S. Attorneys and other staff, you will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty and property of citizens. The United States Attorney's Office serves as the principal litigator for its judicial district and is responsible for coordinating multiple agency investigations within the district. The United States Attorney has the responsibility and authority to prosecute violations of Federal criminal statutes, defend the government in civil actions, seek the enforcement of a variety of civil enforcement statutes, and institute proceedings for the collection of fines and penalties.

Assignments for non-law student volunteers may involve clerical tasks and other litigation support responsibilities. Interns may also summarize transcripts, join attorneys in meetings, and observe court proceedings. In addition, interns may have assignments such as legal and public record research, evidentiary and documentary review, and trial preparation. This internship experience provides unique exposure to the inner workings of the criminal justice system and participants receive invaluable mentorship from some of the nation's best litigators. If selected for this position, interns will also work with a well-respected team that is responsible for administrative support assistance.

  • You must be a United States citizen or national.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, as well as credit and tax checks. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • You must meet half-time student enrollment requirements.
  • You must submit a transcript or proof of enrollment with your application.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • You must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per week during regular business hours, Monday -Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Internship begins in the Fall of 2026, and runs throughout the 2026-2027 school year. You must be able to commit to at least one semester.
  • Enrollment MUST be in an accredited high school, technical, vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university,or certification program equivalent to at least 1 academic year of full-time study.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky is currently looking for high school and/or college students to serve as interns in the Lexington and London, KY offices.

Only current high school and college students may apply. Applicants must have a strong academic background, excellent research and writing skills, an eye for detail, and a commitment to fairness and integrity supporting the administration of justice.

Interns must be United States citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States. (Currently, natives of American Samoa, Swains Island and certain inhabitants of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups that owe permanent allegiance to the United States.). You must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.

Education

All academic coursework must be completed at a high school, college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to timely provide such evidence by submitting proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency with your application materials. Payment of relocation expenses will not be authorized.
