The Laundry Worker loads and unloads linen carts accurately and efficiently, utilizing linen that has been in storage the longest. The Laundry Worker exercises caution in moving up to 1000 lb carts around corners, through narrow hallways and congested patient areas, up and down ramps, constantly aware of possible hazards to patients, staff, and visitors. The Laundry Worker must utilize proper technique in distributing and picking up linen to prevent cross-contamination.

Help

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Processing, delivering, issuing, pickup, and storage of linen and employee uniforms.
  • Fills linen carts with required amounts of linen in accordance with established quotas and adjusts quotas when appropriate.
  • Delivers clean linen to clinical areas throughout the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System.
  • Counts incoming linen and reports discrepancies to appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintains uniform records.
  • Issue uniforms to new employees.
  • Stamp uniforms and various garments using various types of heat press machines.
  • Collecting, record safekeeping, and delivering patient effects.
  • Keeps work area, linen carts, and bins in a clean, sanitary condition.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, and as required due to emergency situations or staff shortages.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm with rotating weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to push and/or pull heavy racks or carts of linen on rollers in the linen room and throughout the Medical Center. The incumbent is required to be his or her feet the majority of the time, and must be able to bend, squat, lift, and climb ladders. Most of the jobs require workers to frequently lift bundles weighing 25 pounds; however, in receiving and shipping; occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing over 50 pounds is required.

Working Conditions: The incumbent may be assigned to an early shift or a late shift, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent will perform work on concrete floors. Must always be safety conscious, especially to pedestrian traffic while moving linen carts. Follows all Medical Center safety and traffic regulations. Pays particular attention to broken equipment, slippery floors, safety and fire hazards. Immediately reports hazards/malfunctions to supervisor. The incumbent performs the majority of work indoors but is occasionally subjected to inclement weather when driving to outlying clinics. Is exposed to heat, humidity, noise, bacteria, and odors. There is a possibility of bodily injury through slipping on wet ramps when loading and unloading linen carts. Accuracy in delivering clean linen carts is required.
