Duties

Help
  • Perform general powerhouse mechanical equipment maintenance.
  • Perform machine work of varying degrees of difficulty and exactness.
  • Perform a variety of types of welding (oxygen-acetylene, shielded metal-arc, TIG, MIG).
  • Install and repair piping systems.
  • Perform a variety of types of cutting (oxygen-acetylene, carbon-arc), brazing, and soldering operations.
  • Maintain metal working equipment and accessories.
  • Operate the full range of hoisting equipment, from tuggers, manlifts, and shop cranes, through large bridge, and gantry cranes, up to and including mobile cranes and live-boom hoisting equipment.
  • Perform rigging for all routine work in accordance with established rigging practice.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license at time of appointment.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain NWD Crane Operator Class I Certification.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Power Plant Mechanic (TC-I) ~ without more than normal supervision. You must have the ability to perform the common tasks of a journey-level mechanic in diagnosing, repairing, adjusting, maintaining, and lubricating bearings, gears, engines, compressors, and hydraulic equipment. You must be able to operate the machine tools and equipment necessary to produce products within tolerances and surface roughness. Work experience is accomplished under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Endurance to work for prolonged periods in cramped, poorly accessible sites when repairing or servicing installed equipment. Physical effort requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting and carrying objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. Machinist work requires acute dexterity .

Working Conditions: Work is performed in the machine shop, in the powerhouse and other project structures and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, heights, oils, greases, confined areas, dust, dirt, water, heat or cold. Also may be exposed to odors, fumes and moving and/or energized equipment. Must wear all safety equipment and appropriate clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
