Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the focal point for the administration and operation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstations and servers, to include correcting security vulnerabilities in response to problems identified in vulnerability scan reports.
  • You will plan, schedule, and participate in the installation of new or modified hardware, operating systems, and applications software supporting Joint Typhoon Warning Center operations and administration.
  • You will serve as Information System Security Officer (ISSO) and will assist the Information System Security Manager (ISSM) in preparing authorization packages, monitoring system security, managing vulnerability scans, and responding to incidents.
  • You will manage system resources including performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability, and hardware and software configuration.
  • You will develop and document systems administration standard operating procedures.
  • You will ensure the rigorous application of information security/ information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of systems administration services.

  • This is a Cyberspace Workforce position, work role code 451 System Administrator, level Intermediate the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain qualifications in DoDM 8140.03 Cyber Workforce Qualification and Department of Navy policies.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • The employee may be required to work overtime as part of their work schedule or on an emergency basis. Recall to duty is a regular requirement of this position.
  • This position is exempt from coverage under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications

To qualify for a GS-11, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience serving as a system administrator for application systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstations and servers.
  • Experience installing software similar to Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and workstations.
  • Experience applying DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) as in to Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems.
  • Experience planning, scheduling and participating in the installation of new or modified hardware, operating systems and applications software.
  • Experience managing user and administrator accounts, network permissions, and access to systems and equipment.
  • Experience resolving hardware/software interface and interoperability problems.
  • Experience managing the installation and integration of systems fixes, updates, and enhancements including Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM), Computer Network Directives (CND), and additional authoritative guidance.
  • Experience in learning and utilizing information technology (IT) concepts, principles, methods, and practices.
  • Experience in administering systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 or greater, VMware vSphere 7.0 or greater, and Junos OS.

Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Ensuring systems availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency.
3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Development and delivery of training to junior civilian and military information technology professionals.
4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. IT-related experience demonstrating this competency include: Participating in the development and implementation of systems security contingency plans, backups, and disaster recovery procedures.

Education

Knowledge, skills, and abilities/competencies are normally attained through the equivalent of one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of the position being filled but may now be obtained through other means.

Successfully completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
Successfully completion of three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
OR
Possession of an LL.M. that is related to this position being filled.
OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Certifications: This position is a Cybersecurity Workforce (CSWF} level II position. This position requires the incumbent obtain and maintain a DoD approved security certification within six months of hire. Employees not meeting DoD 8570.01 certification requirements within six months of hire shall be removed from the position.

Lifting medium to heavy items exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 25-50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly is required.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be *requested and approved prior to the appointment date* and is not guaranteed.
