Duties

Help
  • Developing and implementing goals, policies, procedures and standards for the Language Interpreters Program (LIP).
  • Initiating and executing complex administrative/management projects.
  • Maintaining an appropriate level of professional competence by keeping informed about language program administration and legal and/or Joint Commission requirements through reading and attending seminars/workshops.
  • Providing expert advice on the administrative and management implications of policy and program proposals.
  • Developing and maintaining professional standards of service and ensures that the program functions in accordance with governing laws, policies, regulations and professional standards of practice.
  • Researching and identifying new concepts and techniques, monitor activities identified for special interest and keep the Chief, SWD informed of developments through conferences and briefing papers.

Qualifications

.In order to qualify for a Supervisory Interpreter (Bilingual-Spanish)-GS-1040, at the GS-13 level, you must meet the following requirement:

Have at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private sector or public sector performing the following types of tasks: 1.) mentoring and training language interpreters working with Limited Proficiency English (LEP) patients; 2.) applying advanced medical vocabulary and specialized terminology (e.g. anatomy, surgical procedures, diseases and medications) in interpreting and translation services; 3.) reviewing and evaluating the accuracy of translated medical documentation and correspondence related to the excerpts of pathology reports or clinical findings; 4.) providing linguistic and cultural guidance to interdisciplinary medical teams, including physicians, nursing staff and other members to support effective communication and reduce cultural barriers; 5.) developing and implementing best practices in working with LEP patients, including resolving complex linguistic problems such as adapting terminology for emerging medical and scientific procedures.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.

This position is located in the Clinical Center (CC) Social Work Department (SWD) of the (NIH). The CC is a 200 bed in-patient research hospital, with an additional Ambulatory Care Research Facility (ACRF), serving thousands of outpatients yearly. The incumbent functions under the supervision of the Chief of the SWD to provide management, direction, oversight, and strategic planning for the Language Interpreters Program (LIP). The LIP supports the NIH in the performance of the intramural research programs by providing professional interpreter services to inpatient and outpatient research subjects and family members who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
